In case you were wondering about the name stunningman, or in case you were thinking “that guy must be pretty arrogant to call himself that,” or even worse “more like un-stunningman if you ask me,” I thought I would share the following story…..

Several years ago at Clemson, my friend Matt was in charge of the announcements at the weekly Fellowship of Christian Athletes meeting. Matt is extremely creative, and he always did something interesting to keep the announcements from being dull. You never knew what sort of costume Matt was going to come out in or what else might happen on the stage. People actually looked forward to the announcements each week!

I had graduated from Clemson and was on staff with FCA at the time, and often Matt’s announcements included some little joke about me in regards to my being old or not having any hair. It was all in good fun, and usually made people laugh. One particular week, Matt made a videotape of sock puppet characters doing the announcements. There were several characters in the video, most of them complete with button eyes and yarn hair. A few seconds into the video, a puppet comes onto the screen who looks like all the other puppets except for one small detail…… “thinning” yarn hair. His name was “Lee Stunningman,” and he was doing a commercial for the Hair Club for Men. If you want, you can actually see the video here. Anyway- the name stuck instantly and there is a whole group of my friends who still call me “stunningman.”

Later in the year, I was able to pay Matt back handsomely for all his wisecracks and my new nickname. That story to come later……
