This past Sunday we crossed into some new territory with Midtown – multiple services. We had been pushing the capacity of the auditorium at the museum near the end of the summer and were of course expecting a few more people once the USC students were back. Multiple services was something I was personally hoping to avoid as long as possible, since it is tough on those who are involved in the service and of course all the volunteers. Things went really well however, and we had our largest attendance so far!
One thing our leadership team has been working on this summer is trying to plan ahead for any growth we might have. While of course we always want as many people as possible to come worship and hear about Jesus, with growth there is real difficulty in keeping the church relationally warm and accessable for people. We believe strongly that part of following Jesus is being in close fellowship with other believers who know each other well and can encourage and challenge each other. Like most churches we have small groups, but we want to go the extra mile in other ways as well. We want to continually model and teach the need for deep relationships and provide opportunities for people to connect with each other. This is critical to the spiritual health of our church.
I am excited to see what happens in the next few weeks. School will be back in full gear, we will see how having 2 services really works out, and we will be having our 2nd GroupLink. (small groups kickoff) My prayer during this “critical mass” time is that God will take our church wherever he wants it to go, and that he will give us the wisdom and humility to recognize and follow where he is leading us.
